Paul Schmit - Brand Ambassador

Paul is a physicist and a passionate nightscape photographer based in the American southwest.  During the day, he spends his professional life working to achieve controlled thermonuclear fusion - the potentially limitless and clean energy source that fuels our sun and every other star in the visible universe - in the laboratory.  At night, he spends most of his free energy finding ways to push the envelope in astrophotography, capturing one-of-a-kind glimpses of ISS transits, intimate deepscapes featuring celestial alignments of vibrant deep sky objects with terrestrial features, time blended scenes contrasting the moods of a landscape under daylight and starlight, as well as more conventional forms of landscape astrophotography.

Paul captures most of his images in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment.  Its stunning dark skies, boundless wilderness, and diverse geography provide endless inspiration for nature photographers.  His work has been featured by Nat Geo Your Shot and NASA, including three features by NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day, and he won the Nightscape category of the New Mexico Magazine annual photography contest in 2021.  In March 2020, the German photography magazine Fotohits published a 6-page interview with him, where he described his approach to capturing and blending daytime and nighttime landscape scenes.  He has written tutorials on composing and capturing time blended images and deepscapes, which appeared on PetaPixel and his own website, respectively.  Considered one of the early practitioners of deepscape photography, he presented a talk on the philosophy and methodology of deepscape imagemaking at the 2021 Nightscaper Conference.
